Your grep PATTERN starts with a hyphen. For instance:

$ ps -ef | grep "-DAPPNAME="
grep: unknown devices method

You'll need to escape with an backslash. The corrected sample above:

ps -ef | grep "\-DAPPNAME="

You have a file in the current directory that starts with a hyphen.
