you probably had synaptic(?) update your sendmail stuff, but you had that installed by selecting the sendmail items instead of the sendmail wrapper package. selecting the wrapper package will correct this, so does selecting sensible-mda e few lines below in all packages.

Alternatively, U could use more advanced command as:

apt-get install sensible-mda

...it works for me.

Alternatively, if you didn\'t use the package manager to install, and used aptitude, then it could be you have not got all required packages. Go to your package manager (eg synaptic) and scroll all the way down to sendmail, and check all packages are checked and up to date. Obviously the sendmail docs are not essential, but make sure all the others are ok.
