Recently, when I tried playing back DVDs, the programs would either crash, or give garbled video output, with many colorful incorrect rectangles, and skippy audio. My initial attempts to fix this were to muck about with libdvdread and libdvdcss. I ran the install-css.sh script. I tried to use setregion. I tried recompiling my kernel with different options. None of this worked. Here\'s what did work: In /etc/lilo.conf, I was booting with the parameter \"hdb=ide-scsi\". Although at one point I recall this option being necessary, in my 2.6.16.1 kernel, this option was impeding dvd playback. I removed this option, and then did `sudo ln -s /dev/hdb /dev/dvd`, and then ran `mplayer dvd://1`, and my DVD played back perfectly.
