This error is because the statefile (on my system /var/lib/munin/plugin-state/munin-spamstats.state) is not writeable by the munin user.
Create the state-file (touch /var/lib/munin/plugin-state/munin-spamstats.state) chown it to munin, and set permissions to rw-rw-rw-. This should solve the problem
