... wrong configuration in /etc/pam.conf | /etc/pam.d/ directory. If you messed around with it and after that su stopped working take a look at your .bash_history or just fetch the generic files from PAM authentication and overwrite the old ones in /etc. g00d luck! OOZIE
quite possibly a damaged /etc/shadow or /etc/passwd
