I had this problem when I installed some new fonts manually and did not set read access to group and others for each font. I used strace to find out why Firefox failed. Even if your case is not the same, also you may discover the root cause this way.
In fact, it is rather rude of Firefox to produce a segmentation fault just because a required font is not accessible (segmentation fault is always rude), but at the moment (version 2.0.0.4) this is what we have.

Answer 4 worked for me, the fonts I installed needed 644 (rw-r-r) permissions. Thanks kindly to the author of #4.

In my case the previous update to extensions failed (due to network unavailability). deleting ~/.mozilla/firefox/<profile>/extensions.cache fixed the problem.
